【Short Biography】
Makoto Shimada is a lawyer admitted to the bar in Japan in April 1981. He majored law at Keio University, obtained judicial qualification and then studied at University College London where he was given master of law degree in 1986. Since 2004, he has been teaching at Keio University Law School where he teaches legal practices of civil litigation, commercial arbitration and negotiation, as well as law of art business and English commercial law. He is also a visiting professor of City Law School, University of London. Prior to the above appointment he practiced international commercial law and dispute resolutions at several law firms, including Nagashima, Ohno & Tsunematsu in Tokyo (1981-1985) and Norton Rose Fulbright in London (1986-1989). The area of his present interest is arbitration in art and cultural heritage.
